Pandering to students won them the election in 2005, so they’re trying it again!

Labour party leader Helen Clark has said her party would introduce student allowances across the board if it forms the next Government.

In a speech to students at Otago University this afternoon, she said the policy would be phased in from next year and be universal by 2012.

The policy would cost $210 million a year once it is fully implemented.

I don’t believe for a second that it will only cost $210 million per year.

Phil and I are working on a press release as we speak.  We’re going to get the scoop on this one!

Lol. Are you f*****g kidding me?!
Sorry. Clarify this a bit for me if you would. This isn’t a tax cut or a tax credit or a tax refund but what a monthly, cash out of pocket stipend to students? One that, by 2012, won’t be reliant at all on financial “need” basis?
And this bit:
“Most of these students would receive no allowance under the current rules and need to borrow, receive help from their parents or work part-time, to make ends meet.”

Oh the horrors!

“a monthly, cash out of pocket stipend to students”

Exactly. Its a weekly cash injection of $170-$190 NZ dollars ($90-$100 US dollars) – not really enough to live on, but pretty close. The current rules state you can only get it if your parents earn less than $50,000 a year, ie, its only for poor families. Support for the poor, right? Sounds fair enough, if you believe in socialism.

But Labour (socialists) are proposing giving this handout to ALL students – even the ones whose parents are millionares and pay for them to live in a flash new inner city apartment. Handouts for the rich and middle class!

“This isn’t a tax cut or a tax credit or a tax refund” – no – it’s a BRIBE!
