In the 1962 murder of lawyer James Patrick Ward, the bomb was extremely simple, according to reports at the time. Damage to the building was only slight so the explosion was not very powerful. I beliee there was mention of it being a small dynamite charge with a battery, two wires and a detonator and the trigger was a microswitch easily obtainable at the time. The best suspect was a European immigrant who had lost an appeal with Ward as his lawyer.

Indeed. Simply replace these concussion bombs (were these soda bottles with a tad of water and a chunk of dry ice tossed into them?) with even the most basic form of grenade and you get casualties. The disruption would be even greater.

Funny (well not really) for all the horror and devastation the 9/11 attacks incurred one wonders if an extensive small scale (i.e. grenades, snipers, pipe bombs) effort that covered weeks or months would not have been much more effective. Back to John Robb here, I suppose.

bin Laden "shot his wad," I suppose. His ideology eclipsed his strategy...

Phil, this reminds me of this time two years ago when Lambton Quay was closed down due to a suspected bomb (which turned out to be a forgotten suitcase).

I guess that's how easy it is to shut down part of a city ...
