Stratford has several other war memorials, but I think the Malone gate is the only one in New Zealand dedicated to a single soldier, which shows you how much he was respected by his men. Talking about tradition, it's great to see that the army continue to wear the lemon squeezer hats - which Malone brought in for the Wellington Battalion in 1914, and which quickly became the headgear for the NZ Division - and have reintroduced the mounted rifles broad-brimmed hat (from WW1 also). Strategist: I expected the same of you :-) I started attending Anzac services, though not at dawn, when I was a cadet in the ATC in Stratford (48 Sqn.).
