Finally some good news about the tense situation in Fiji, where military chief Bainimarama has been threatening to overthrow Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase. Bainimarama has apparently delayed his return to Fiji from NZ, and Qarase will be flying down to Wellington today for last-minute talks, facilitated by the NZ government.

It seems no-one wants to be in Fiji right now – Aussie police commissioner Andrew Hughes has flown home with his family, Bainimarama and Qarase are in NZ, NZ High Commission staff have been evacuated, and tourists are rescheduling or cancelling their island holidays.

Correction of the postings above,re :….”it seems no one wants to be in Fiji right now”.The Police Commissioner-Andrew Hughes is flying back to Australia”…-it’s his wife and children that are returning to Oz.The NZ High Commission staff may be leaving Fiji, but the Australian and most other Embassies are remaining in Fiji – Australian tourists though they have been issued with a travel warning, have decided to continue with their stay or their intended holiday in Fiji – please get your information correctly before you post them on your website.

That’ll by why Hughes is in Cairns right now will it?

AUSTRALIAN Andrew Hughes, Fiji’s Police Commissioner, was forced to flee the troubled Pacific nation amid “serious and specific” death threats to himself and his family.
Mr Hughes, his wife, Vicki, and two sons were secretly evacuated to Australia on Tuesday after a month at the centre of the political crisis.

Fair enough, he and the Aussies will have used a bit of subterfuge which you fell for, but chill out a bit.

Also, compared to the Kiwis, the Aussie High Comm staff can afford to not bolt right away as, rather than being downtown, their compound is a large area high up on a hill with a big wall and only two ways in. Those SAS boys that were in the Black Hawk could easily hold off the whole Fijian Army in up there (Possible exaggeration) while their people were choppered out.

Thanks for the information Mark. Great coverage on your blog, too. I changed the post back to the original wording about Hughes.
