NZ Herald: “Libertarianz deny plot behind Labour legal action”

The Libertarianz Party now occupies a proud place in the realm of Conspiracy Theory, alongside such favourites as the Illuminati, the Bilderberg Group, the CIA, Operation Gladio and the United Fruit Company. Even the Prime Minister of New Zealand is speculating frantically about how a “little right wing outfit” like us can afford to hire a QC – concluding that we must be a front for the National Party and the Exclusive Brethren. You know, because the Exclusive Brethren are so libertarian!

However, this isn’t the first time we’ve featured in the paranoid ravings of a conspiracy theorist, as this Chris Trotter column demonstrates. He seems to believe that the Libertarianz, along with Zenith Applied Philosophy and Lindsay Perigo’s Free Radical are actually in control of the New Zealand government! “What we consider extremism in one decade all too often becomes the conventional wisdom of the next,” he says. I hope so. That is our strategy, after all – we hope our ideas become accepted, even if we ourselves never gain power. And I know Lindsay was thrilled to see this, in the same column:

YOUNGER New Zealanders should consider the origins of the current obsession with political correctness. This catch-all expression for every social policy with which the Right disagrees can be traced back to the antics of Lindsay Perigo, editor of The Free Radical and founder of the far-Right Libertarianz Party…

If you’re interested, we aren’t actually funded by the EB, we aren’t right wing, we oppose the National Party (but think it’s time for a change), and last election we spent just under $40,000 dollars of our own money. We aren’t funded by shadowy billionaires, but by ordinary hard-working New Zealanders concerned about the growth of big government. As Bernard says: “Of course, the question is not how we have the money to hire QCs… The question is how the Prime Minister got the money to pay for her pledge cards.”

But don’t just take my word for it; go and read PC’s excellent post about Pete Hodgson’s attacks on us. Conspiracy theory enthusiasts might enjoy All Embracing But Underwhelming, a blog by an Auckland student writing a thesis on conspiracy theory. My personal favourite is the one with a secret NATO army, staged terror attacks, Silvio Berlusconi, a rogue Masonic lodge and an airliner shot down over the Mediterranean…
